Request #RT-19449

Open
This is a records request pursuant to the California Public Records Act. I am researching the recently released video game Watch Dogs 2 by Ubisoft. The game is a very rich, open world treatment of the Bay Area, which includes conflicts with the Oakland Police Department. I would very much like to learn to what extent local government was involved in the project overall or otherwise worked with Ubisoft. I would also like to know whether the City of Oakland has otherwise discussed this video game either internally or with other departments or other law enforcement agencies or groups. For example, maybe concerns were raised over the use of OPD's name or the subplot involving police corruption. Accordingly, I am seeking the following records: 1) All department records regarding the video game Watch Dogs 2 2) All communications between the department and Ubisoft from Jan 1., 2010 through Feb. 3, 2017. I am filing this request with several departments. Even if your department doesn't have responsive records, I would appreciate it greatly if you could point me in the right direction. Who else might have responsive records? Some boilerplate; The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes. In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not. Thank you in advance for processing this request. It's quite possible you may have nothing at all. But please let me know if you think another department may have records. Sincerely, Dave Maass

In order for the Department to respond to your request we have to submit a request to the Information Technology Department (ITD) to conduct a comprehensive search for emails and any documents relating to your request. Once we receive the search results the records will need to be reviewed for any responsive documents. Due to the Department’s limited staffing resources and the numerous public records requests we receive we need additional time to respond. The Public Records Request Unit will also need to wait on a response from ITD. We will provide you with any updates and/or releasable information as it becomes available however it may take some time to complete your request.
