Dear Public Records Officer:
I am a law professor at the UCLA School of Law conducting an academic study on civil litigation
against law enforcement officers and agencies. Pursuant to applicable public records laws, I request the
following public records for purposes of my research:
1. Documents reflecting the names and docket numbers of each the civil lawsuits filed from
1/1/2011-12/31/2012 against the Oakland Police Department and/or its officers, in state and
2. Documents reflecting the outcome of each of the cases identified in response to Request #1,
including but not limited to any amount paid to plaintiff(s) in these cases.
For the purposes of this request, “public records” are defined as any writing containing information
prepared, owned, used, or retained by your agency, regardless of physical form or characteristics.
Writings include, but are not limited to, documents that are handwritten, typewritten, photocopied, and
transmitted by electronic mail or facsimile.
If there is a waiver of copying costs for academic research, I request it. If not, I am willing to pay
reasonable charges for copying. Please let me know if anticipated costs exceed $20.00. If possible, I
request that the documents be provided by e-mail attachment or CD-ROM.
